Housing Registration for Guests

Remember, housing is not guaranteed.  Please remember the following:

  • Housing spaces are first come, first served, and are reserved for PAID registrants (and scholarship recipients) only.
  • If you are traveling with someone, please make sure that you both register for housing separately, and list each other in the appropriate section.
  • Please let us know ASAP if your plans have changed! Housing in New York is tight, and there are no extra spots to be squandered... be respectful to your friends.

Our hosts have graciously opened their homes to you, which in this town of New York is a huge deal. Space and privacy are important to us here! Please respect your hosts' home by doing the following:

  1. Bringing a card, a small gift, or other treat to share with them (It does not have to be expensive, just something to show that you are grateful for their help).
  2. Respecting the space (doing dishes, cleaning up after yourself).
  3. Respecting quiet time: party time is party time and sleep time is sleep time. Don't get them confused! :-)

FAQ:

WHAT SHOULD I BRING?
You are expected to provide your own towel, toiletries, food, etc (unless otherwise negotiated with your host). You will be informed whether you will be expected to bring your own bedding when housing assignments go out.

WHAT WILL MY SLEEPING SPACE BE LIKE?
That depends on who you are placed with! Sleeping spaces range from space on the floor where you are expected to bring your own bed/bedding, floor space with an airbed provided to you, a couch, or sometimes even a guest room with a real bed! It all depends on how many hosts we get to volunteer their homes, and what their accommodations are like.

HOW WILL I GET TO/FROM THE CLASSES AND DANCES?
Generally, a "house" will travel together, because it's easier - and more fun! - that way. You are in no way obligated to stick with the other people you are staying with, but it's probably wise. You will most likely end up navigating public transit to get places. (There can be lots of service changes on the weekends, so it's a good idea to check the MTA website before you leave!)

WILL I GET A KEY?
Maybe! Some hosts do have extra keys for guests to come and go as they please; others will only have one key and need you to communicate getting to and from the house.  Make sure you speak with your host to work this out BEFORE the weekend begins - we don't want you to end up locked out or stranded!

WHAT ABOUT FOOD?
Guests are generally responsible for their own meals, but cooking together can be fun as well.  Ask your host or other locals for ideas on where the most delicious, cheap food is, and talk to your host about what food is ok for you to munch on.

**SAYING THANK YOU:
It is customary to plan on giving your host a thank-you gift of some sort. It's not mandatory, but is a really nice way of saying thank you - and keeping our hosts happy helps ensure that we have hosts for you again next year! It does not need to be anything fancy or expensive. It can be a card, some candy/chocolates, something you've drawn for them, a home-cooked meal, or anything else you can think of.

If you have any questions or concerns after reading the FAQ above, please contact us.
